Sometime close to dawn fell asleep but his sleep was fitful, his mind turning memories over and over and over.

A white glimmer in the trees. The glinting edge of a knife.

Panic.

A man ahead, shaking in fear. A black shadow against more blackness.

The wide, wide whites of his eyes.

There’s something else. Something beyond the trees.

Squealing. The sound of a pig being gutted.

The gurgle of blood.

Silence.

And then Uthiyan was running, running as fast as he could, his pulse racing, roaring in his ears, through the forest.

Suddenly he stopped in front of a statue veiled by darkness.

A statue of a woman, that much he could make out.

He must be near the shrine of the goddess Kuttuvai.

The moon burst free of the clouds and shone between the trees, moonlight creeping up the length of the statue to illuminate the face of the goddess.

But it was not the face that Uthiyan expected to see – the wrathful face of the goddess.

No, this was another face, familiar and human, eyes sightless, and something in her expression begging for help.

This was Kannaki’s face.
